After independence, Thane grew slowly and attained the status of an industrial town in the 60's and 70's. There was also a corresponding growth in trade, transport and construction activities, which picked up tremendously in the 80's. The 90's has seen the city burgeoning ahead, with great stride in construction and housing. The population has also increased manifold and Thane now occupies pride of place as a prime suburb and is all set to make its mark in the next millennium.

STATION AREA TRAFFIC IMPROVEMENT SCHEME The Scheme The Circulation area of the Railway station provides means for exchanging different modes of transport viz. Buses, Auto Rickshaws, Taxis and Railways. The circulation area outside Thane Railway Station is inadequate to cater current load. Commuters are facing problems in change over of modes of transport. To overcome the problems, the Thane Municipal Corporation has proposed improvement in circulation area by adding extra area by constructing deck in front of Thane Railway Station to facilitate all category of buses to ply over deck and rest of the modes below deck. All commuter movements through FOB. The proposal is called SATIS (Station Area Traffic Improvement Scheme.) General Body of Thane Municipal Corporation has approved the scheme vide resolution no. 14 dated 16.06.2004. The Central Railways have concurred the implementation of the scheme with few suggestions like creating facade and space frame over deck to improve aesthetic looks of old Station Building also. This is taken well care of and the Principal Chief Engineer, Central Railways has given approval in principle. |
